What is the maintenance schedule for outboards?

Maintenance schedules vary from an engine manufacturer to another. Some of the engines have longer service intervals than others and this is sometimes one of the decision points when buying a new outboard: maintenance costs! Even with all the differences that exist between the recommendations of different engine manufacturers, they all are very similar when it comes to salt water use conditions. Special attention and care must be provided for engines that are used in salt water. Click the link below to open the general outboard maintenance schedule in *.PDF format,  for salt/fresh water use. For download, right click and "Save target as...". You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to view this document.

What is overall boat performance?

The overall boat performance is a combination of boat attributes (hull design and displacement, engine horse power, engine height at transom, propeller diameter and pitch, etc.) and the outcomes (engine life, fuel economy, maximum speed, cruising speed, etc.) obtained in normal operating conditions  For more information visit the Boat Performance section.

What causes an engine to overheat?

There are many reasons why outboard engines overheat. Most common cause for overheating is the salt build-up inside the engine block and head. Other causes include but are not limited to:

  •  Thermostat failure
  •  Running in shallow waters
  •  Water pump failure
  •  Incorrect (low oil) fuel/oil ratio (two strokes)

Overheating is a very serious problem which can cause serious (and very expensive) damage to your engine. If overheating occurs consult your engine owner's manual and follow the procedure. If the problem persist contact your dealer/repairer or try us.
